Homeschooling

Quick note before you read any further:

I have another site up that's dedicated to homeschooling alone, and tells you how to get free curriculum and resources. The resources are great even if your kids go to school, and you just need help at home.

In September of 2000, when our oldest daughter Rebecca was in senior kindergarten at our local public school, I got into a debate with a friend who was considering homeschooling. I decided to talk her out of it, and in the process I talked myself into it! The reasons that I thought homeschooling was a bad idea did not hold up to scrutiny. So the following year we began homeschooling Rebecca, then 6, and Katie, then 4. We had a wonderful year, and both girls progressed approximately two grades. Here's why we homeschool:

  • We can ensure they learn the basics thoroughly
  • They can work at their own pace. If they are catching on, they can go as quickly as they want. If they aren't, they can slow down. Learning can be student-directed.
  • They can accomplish far more in far less time, giving them much more time to play, explore, take lessons, read, and do many of the other things that make childhood fun! We homeschool approximately 2-3 hours a day, and that includes many extras. The average "schooled" child is at school for 7 hours a day, plus transportation and homework on top of that.
  • They don't have homework!
  • We as a family can learn together, building closer relationships.
  • We can incorporate our faith into everything we do, so that they receive a well-rounded moral education.
  • They avoid the pitfalls of schoolyard life. When they socialize with other kids (which they do several times a day; we live on a busy street) we can control the games they play and the rules by which they play.
  • As siblings, they are each others' best friends.
